Dungannon recorded their first victory of the 2015/16 Aquasprints campaign with an excellent display against a gutsy Sliabh Beagh team in Monaghan on Saturday 23rd April. Both teams came to this gala determined to make up for recent narrow loses but it was to be Dungannon’s night as they took the victory which sets them up nicely for their final home gala of the season versus local rivals Cookstown on 21st May.
The opening medley relays saw each team record two wins each however Dungannon took the initiative once the individual events got underway, recording seven victories from eight backstroke races and supporting this with a further four second place finishes. Six wins and six second place finishes in the breaststroke events gave Dungannon a lead of 38 points by the halfway stage. The butterfly and freestyle events were more evenly contested with four wins for each team however Dungannon again took the majority of the second place finishes to increase their overall advantage. Both teams upped their game for the final four freestyle relay races – in three of these the gap between first and second place was less than 2 seconds! Overall the Dungannon swimmers can be very pleased with their performance as they came home winners with a final score of Sliabh Beagh 172-228 Dungannon.
