Bangor and Ards battle in a tight contest!

Ards Leisure centre was the venue for the Bangor vs Ards Aquasprint fixture on Friday 17th April. With the gallery packed full of a loud and supportive crowd the gala kicked off just shortly after 6.30pm.

Both teams had large squads on show, with Bangor fielding a large amount of swimmers in the bottom two age groups. The first events were the Medley Relays with honours even in what was a great set of races.

The same pattern followed in both the Backcrawl and Breaststroke events, with both sides exchanging wins and key placings on a race by race basis. At half way Ards were in front 104 to 96 points.

With both teams and supporters buoyed by the closeness of the gala, the Butterfly events seemed to take on even more intensity with Bangor showing some signs of a fight back. However, this was short lived as the Ards team once again fought back in both the front crawl individual and relay races to finish the night the winner… 213 to Bangor’s 187, a much closer margin than in the corresponding fixture last year.

Overall a super nights racing, contested in front of a jam packed gallery which was very vocal in its support. A brilliant gala in which lots of young kids got the chance to race and enjoy themselves competitively for the first time, which is what this sport is all about !
