Aquasprint 2015/2016 Report – Newry & Mourne

This year saw a great season for our Aquasprint team. We were placed in Division 3 with Portadown, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Lecale & Lurgan. We swam 5 galas, 2 home and 3 away. Of those galas, we controversially drew with Ballymena, while winning to the other 4 clubs. As the table stands we go into the finals for promotion against Ballymena and Lecale or Portadown. The final will be held on Friday 3rd June in Cookstown.

With the Aqua sprint we have 4 age groups, D group 2014, C group 2015, B group 2006 and A group 2007/2008. At the home galas we have tried to get as many swimmers as possible involved, this is a difficult task in many of the age groups, and for some swimmers they may have had just 1 or 2 relay swims. For the away galas, we were limited in the number of swimmers we can use, particularly when swimming in Downpatrick were there is a 5-lane pool.

The Aquasprint this year has been a real team effort, we have 6 coaches who have coordinated and picked the teams, they are Katrina, Gary, Martin, Enda, Liam, Carol, Belinda and Roisin. Not only do they coach the swimmers all year round, they text around, organize their age group, and encourage each swimmer to do their best on the day. So a big thanks to them. We also need to thank Paul, and the rest of the coaches who coach our juniors, Linda, Peter, Peter, Oliver, Kevin Buns,.

Finally I’d like to thank all those parents who have been involved in the aquasprint, as timekeepers, touch judges, and those who organized the refreshments at home galas. Big thanks to Katrina, Tinekea and Carol, who do a super job on the desk! Also a special thanks to Caroline Haffey for all the super newspaper coverage she’s got us this year – it’s been fantastic and your write ups are great!!

We’ve had two super team captains this year who have done a brilliant job in and out of the pool! I think everyone would agree Ben’s speeches have been great!!

Lastly this is the end of Aquasprint for Katrina & Gary, I’d like to thank them and their families for their commitment to the Aquasprint, I imagine from Shea and Julianna – through to Ben and Rachel they probably haven’t missed an aquasprint in god knows how long!!!

So I wish our swimmers and coaches all the best for the final and hopefully promotion for 2016/2017
